Feeling Tired, Bruised, or Run Down? Don’t Ignore the Signs. Most people ignore fatigue, illness, or night sweats as a simple stress or life on the go. These, however, can indicate blood cancer.
Blood cancer is a quiet disease since the symptoms of blood cancer may be obscure or seem not so obvious. However, timely identification of early signs of blood cancer may bring the difference in timely treatment. According to a study by Blood cancer UK around 40,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with blood cancer each year, and about 280,000 people are living with the disease. Since there are types of blood cancer and every type is different, the symptoms vary too, depending on the cancer stage of course.
At the Premier Private GP, we see patients that are concerned about unusual fatigue, chronic infections, or unexplained bruising. In lots of cases, these symptoms are not cancer. But occasionally they are pointing at something that requires immediate action.
Check the NHS guide on blood cancer to get an overview of different types of blood cancer and what they mean.
Symptoms of Blood Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore
Fatigue and Weakness
One of the most common signs of blood cancer is constant fatigue. It is very common when there are not enough healthy red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout your body.
Unexplained Weight Loss
Weight loss without trying can be an early symptom, especially in lymphoma. Cancer cells can make your metabolism faster resulting in sudden weight loss.
Night Sweats
Waking up in sweat can be a sign of infection, change of hormones, or even blood cancer in some instances.
Easy Bruising and Bleeding
When blood cancers decrease your platelets, bruising is more frequent and small cuts are more difficult to clot. Common nosebleeds and bleeding gums are also the warning signs.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
You may have persistent lumps in your neck or armpits or in the groin area which may be associated with lymphoma. It is always good to check if they are not gone.

How Is Blood Cancer Diagnosed?
We offer private health screenings and blood tests at our clinic that often play a key role in detecting early concerns. If results raise suspicion, your GP may recommend further best tests for blood cancer.
Physical Examination
What usually happens is a GP checks overall health, reviews medical history, and looks for visible signs such as swollen lymph nodes, bruising, or infection.
Biopsies
Sometimes, a biopsy is required. In the case of lymphoma, the doctor may remove some lymph tissue or a whole lymph node to test it in the laboratory. In case of a leukaemia or myeloma, a bone marrow test can be requested to ensure the presence of abnormal cells.
Imaging Scans
Scans can help detect enlarged lymph nodes or see if cancer has spread. Depending on the case, tests may include:
- CT scan
- MRI
- PET scan
- Ultrasound
- X-ray
While we don’t perform biopsies or advanced imaging in our clinic, we can arrange fast referrals. What we do provide is a fast, reassuring pathway: from initial symptoms to same-day GP consultation to private blood tests and follow-up.
Can Blood Cancer Be Picked Up on a Test?
A blood test to detect cancer may be among the initial tests that your GP may suggest. Although no one test would detect all the signs of blood cancer, some signs like the presence of abnormal white cells, anaemia, or low platelets may be a warning sign.

Can We Reduce the Risk of Blood Cancer?
Your blood is made up of cells that are constantly being replaced. Normally, the dead cells are replaced, and new ones are produced whenever necessary. However, once the DNA in the blood cell becomes damaged, the cell can start to grow in an irregular manner or even increase in number very quickly. These malformed cells may accumulate, prevent normal cells from performing their task, and interfere with how your blood combats infection, carries oxygen, and heals. This uncontrolled growth causes blood cancer.

FAQs Answered:
Can cancer be identified with a blood test?
Yes, some cancers can show up in blood results. For blood cancers, abnormal blood counts may indicate the disease.
Will a full blood test show cancer?
A standard blood count can’t confirm cancer on its own, but it often gives doctors important clues. Further tests, such as scans or bone marrow biopsies, may be needed.
Does low blood count mean cancer?
Not always. Low blood counts can be caused by many conditions, including vitamin deficiencies or infections. But it’s important to rule out something more serious.
