What is a cortisone injection?

A cortisone injection, also called a steroid injection, puts a corticosteroid medicine directly into or around a painful joint or soft tissue. It reduces inflammation in that area, which can ease pain and help you move more comfortably.

Because the medicine goes straight to where it is needed, the dose is low and it mainly acts around the joint rather than through the whole body.

  • Reduces inflammationEases pain and stiffness in the treated area.
  • Works within daysMost people notice a difference within a few days.
  • Up to 3 a yearUsually no more than 3 into the same joint in a year.

What can a cortisone injection treat?

We use cortisone injections for joint and soft-tissue pain in the knees, shoulders, hips and smaller joints. Examples include:

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder pain and stiffness
  • Bursitis on the outer hip (trochanteric bursitis) or the front of the knee (prepatellar bursitis)
  • Pain in smaller joints

Your clinician will check whether an injection is right for your condition at your consultation.

How much does a private cortisone injection cost?

At Premier Private GP, a cortisone injection costs £250. Every treatment starts with a £120 Pain Clinic Consultation, so the total is £370.

We always confirm the full cost before anything goes ahead.

Pain Clinic Consultation: assessment of your pain and a check that an injection is right for you.

  • Step 2£250

Cortisone injection, using ultrasound guidance where needed.

How long does a cortisone injection last?

Most people notice the effect within a few days. Some have a short flare of pain for a day or two before it starts to work.

Relief can last from a few weeks to several months, and it varies from person to person. If your pain comes back, your clinician can advise whether another injection is suitable. Usually no more than 3 are given into the same joint in a year.

Cortisone vs Arthrosamid for knee pain

For knee osteoarthritis, a longer-lasting non-steroidal option is also available. Read our guide to the Arthrosamid knee injection.
