A cortisone injection, also called a steroid injection, puts a corticosteroid medicine directly into or around a painful joint or soft tissue. It reduces inflammation in that area, which can ease pain and help you move more comfortably.
Because the medicine goes straight to where it is needed, the dose is low and it mainly acts around the joint rather than through the whole body.
